Children to bringin a favourite small toy (teddy or similar). Look at each otherstoys and talk about them, discuss artefact as being a term todescribe anything made by people.

Activity: drawtheir toy and label it.

To use commonwords and phrases relating to the passing of time.

To learn how todecide whether a toy is old or new.

Recap on previouslesson about toys. What was an artefact? How do we know somethingis old or new? Can they think of any differences between old andnew toys? Share an old toy of your own if possible, how old is it,when did you have it?

Activity: mindmap characteristics of old and new toys, availability, price,materials etc

Look at photos oftoys and decide what they are made from, (wood, plastic, metal).Can this help us to know whether they are old or new? Activity: wholeclass to sort toys/photos into old and new hoops,justifying/explaining move.

Recap on previouslessons about toys. Introduce idea of being similar and different.Discuss in partners, why a doll/toy car now, is similar ordifferent to those in the past

Activity: thinkof their favourite teddy, complete a sheet comparing theirs and anold teddy, looking at similarities and differences

To discusschanges in their own life and that of those around them

Think aboutsimilarities and differences, this time thinking of way of life.Why were toys so popular in the past? (No TV, playstations etc) arethey still favourites now? Children to think about what theirfavourite toy is, ask adults in classroom/parents or grandparentswhat theirs was when they were young.

Activity:research on the internet about old toys and what they were madefrom. Look at who had them; did all children have lots of toys toplay with?

To communicatewhat they have learnt about toys of now and the past

Children to thinkabout the work we have been doing on toys. Can they explain what anartefact is? How do we know if a toy is old or new?

Activity:children to work in mixed ability groups. Each group to be given aphotograph/object. They have to discuss what they know about it old/new, and how they know it. Can they suggest who might have hadit and played with it?
