* Tell the classthat they are going to compare different sorts of jam tarts. Ensurethat there are jam tarts from different price ranges. Use thefollowing questions to help the class make the comparison: - What does thepackaging suggest about the product? - What informationis there on the packaging to tell you about the ingredients inthis product? - What else hasbeen added to shop-bought tarts? Can we explain why? - What differenttypes of food do the tarts contain? * Organise thechildren into groups and ensure that each group has at least twodifferent sorts of jam tart. Explain that they are going to comparewhat the tarts look and taste like using criteria such as shape, size, colour, smell, taste, texture of pastry and filling. * Use plasticineto explore ideas for pastry containers, e.g. round case sectionedoff with strips of pastry with each section filled with a differentcoloured jam; shaped cases made using ready-made shaped pastrycutters; a square or rectangular shaped pinched up at thecorners; a hand made shape or structure to reflect consumersinterest, e.g. football boot, dinosaur, Diwali lamp. * Children todesign their own jam tart.
