Outcomes at the endof the unit: Children can ask simple questions. They can identifya contents page and an index and use these to find the right pageto answer simple questions. Children can say what the key featuresof a simple information text are. Children can write sentences foran information text in an appropriate style.

Read with thechildren a page from an information book about whales. Block outsome of the words in the text and display these in a word bank onthe IWB.

Get the ch to matchthe words to the gaps and reread each sentence to check that itmakes sense.

 

Display thesentences about whales on p2 & 3 of Dolphin flipchart and get thech to decide if the sentences should end with a capital letter orfull stop. Emphasise the use of question marks when we are askinga question.

 

As a class thinkabout what questions we could ask to find out more aboutwhales.

Biff Ask the ch towrite a set of questions to help us find out more aboutwhales.

Chip Write questionsto help us find out more about whales. Emphasise use of questionmarks and question vocab how, what, where, why.

Kipper Get the ch to addfull stops or question marks to given sentences (4b)

Floppy Working with MHto write questions about Whales. Support to ensure use of capitalletters and question marks.

Ask Kipper group toread out their sentences and the rest of the class need to decideif the sentences need full stops or question marks.

Ask the ch to readout some of the questions they wrote yesterday about Whales. Modelhow to answer these questions using the information book. Show howwe could use the contents page or index and use glossary to look uptechnical/special words. Repeat with several questions.

 

Show ch the websitehttp://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/whales/and show them how to navigate it. Answer 2 of the questions usingthe website.

Biff &Chip To use theinformation book to answer some of the question they wroteyesterday about Whales. They are to write what they find out infull sentences.

Floppy Working with MH provide with a Under the sea picture. They are to say and thenwrite sentences about what they can see focus on rememberingcapital letters and full stops in their writing. Encourage ch tosay the sentence first and encourage/praise use of capitals & fullstops.

Ask Biff, Chip andKipper groups to share some of the Whale facts they have found withthe rest of the class.

Look at the websitehttp://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/whales/.Spend time browsing the website with the ch. Look at all thedifferent types of Whales. Tell ch that they are going to make aninformation poster about Whales. Have a look at all the differenttypes of Whales and as a class decide which one we will writeabout.

Show the ch how tonavigate around the pages.

As a class writedown a list of good questions we could ask to find out about Whalese.g. What types of Whales are there? What colour are they? How bigdo Whales grow? Where do they live? What is its name? What dothey eat?

All groups to usethe website or books if they prefer to find out about Whales (inpairs). The ch can browse today & tomorrow we will begin to writedown our information.

 

MH to work withwhole class helping when needed.

Show a goodinformation page and ask the ch what its features are? Bold Title,labelled diagram, clear writing, text in boxes. Put all the ideasinto a checklist and save t flipchart file. Tell the ch theses arethe things their information page will need to have.

Recap on websiteagain and what we have already found out about Whales. Ask the chif they can give the names of some of the different types ofWhales.

Show ch the list ofquestions we want to find out about Whales. Provide ch withtemplate to record their findings on.

All groups to tryand answer the key questions about the Whale we have chosen byusing the website on the laptops. The ch can use the template torecord their findings. SR to work with Floppy and Kipper groups tohelp with the reading of the information.

Shared write a fewsentences on the board together onto the template saved onto theDolphin flipchart. Take suggestions from ch and discuss goodexamples and bad examples.

Provide ch withposter template with questions and headings for them to completeabout the Whale we have chosen.

SR to work withFloppy to provide focus in remembering capital letters and fullstops.
